Paul is arguing against the rejection of the Jews. He uses an event in the life of Elijah to show that even in the darkest moments, there was a faithful remnant, the elect. Paul is an example of that as are the Apostles. God has made permanent covenants with his people that he cannot break.

Following the discussions, Jesus takes three disciples up a mountain where he is transfigured. Moses and Elijah appear and God the Father speaks. This is an important event for Jesus and the disciples.

Herod Antipas orders the execution of John at the request indirectly of Herodias. Herod only met Jesus in his final week but had influences in his home and territory. John fulfilled his mission.

Two blind men call Jesus 'Son of David' - a messianic title. They are healed but the Pharisees say it is through demonic power. Jesus returns to Nazareth but is not accepted there.

John's disciples are sent to question Jesus. He answers and highlights the importance of John's role as a prophet.

Jesus performs a resurrection miracle in Nain. This recalls the resurrections performed by Elijah and Elisha and with others, prefigures the resurrection of Jesus and the final resurrection of all people. Jesus shows compassion.

Jesus in his home, Nazareth, reads in the synagogue from Isaiah about the Servant of the Lord. This is Jesus' spiritual manifesto. The Spirit appointed him to preach, proclaim freedom from sin, heal, free the oppressed and declare God's favour. Mixed reception from his hearers.

John's identity is questioned, reflecting views about Messiah. He calls Jesus 'the Lamb of God' referring to the Passover lamb in the Old Testament. Like John, we are to point others to Jesus. The episode ends in Revelation and the future role of the Lamb.

John's father, Zechariah, was on duty in the Temple, when an angel announced the birth of a son in his old age. Zechariah hesitated to believe and was struck dumb. John's mission was to call Israel back to true faith.
