After the healing of Bartimaeus, Jesus continues into Jericho amidst the crowds. He calls Zaccheus by name and this chief tax collector's life is transformed and he gives away much of his wealth.

Jesus shows that children are important in the Kingdom and includes them in the same way he includes others on the fringes of society. Adults can learn from children.

Jesus uses two extremes in the Jewish religious culture to teach that God does not show mercy according to the works of the self-righteous but to the repentant heart of the sinner.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep challenges the Pharisees judgemental attitude towards those who go astray. Jesus equates the joy of the woman who found the lost coin to God's rejoicing over a sinner who repents.

Whilst dining with a Pharisee, Jesus is anointed by a prostitute. Jesus contrasts the two reactions to him and his message. By faith, the woman's sins are forgiven. She repents and finds grace.

Using different examples, Jesus exhorts his disciples not to set themselves up as judge of others but rather to forgive them. This is not teaching for everyone - only for disciples. Let God be the judge.

Matthew, a customs officer working for the Romans, responds to Jesus' call and throws a party for his friends. Jesus attends and is criticised. He quotes Hosea and promotes mercy as an attitude for his followers.

John, a prophet working near Jerusalem by the River Jordan. His message challenges people to repent and be baptised. He specifically challenges the wealthy, tax collectors and soldiers and points to the Messiah.
