Paul states that government is God’s plan for society. Despite the different forms of government, Christians should respect and honour those in authority who are under God’s sovereignty. Christians should pay their taxes and pray for those in authority.

The Pharisees and Herodians try to trick Jesus by asking about paying taxes. Jesus replies 'Give Caesar what is Caesar's and God what is God's, clearly defining a difference between Church and State.

After the healing of Bartimaeus, Jesus continues into Jericho amidst the crowds. He calls Zaccheus by name and this chief tax collector's life is transformed and he gives away much of his wealth.

The Parable of the Lost Sheep challenges the Pharisees judgemental attitude towards those who go astray. Jesus equates the joy of the woman who found the lost coin to God's rejoicing over a sinner who repents.

When asked to pay a Temple tax, Jesus miraculously provides the money. He continues to warn of the difficulties to come in his ministry.

Whilst dining with a Pharisee, Jesus is anointed by a prostitute. Jesus contrasts the two reactions to him and his message. By faith, the woman's sins are forgiven. She repents and finds grace.

Matthew, a customs officer working for the Romans, responds to Jesus' call and throws a party for his friends. Jesus attends and is criticised. He quotes Hosea and promotes mercy as an attitude for his followers.

The Passover feast is explained. The role of the Temple with its corrupt trading is challenged. Jesus is introducing the New Covenant in which sacrifices and the Temple are no longer necessary.
